Plant City in Florida is a hive of activity all year round and there is always something going on whether you are a resident or visitor to the area including an extensive annual events program. These include a range of activities that will mean fun for the whole family regardless of their individual hobbies and interests.
The sports stadium in the heart of Plant City was previously the spring training grounds for the Cincinnati Reds, one of the states favorite Major League Baseball teams before they moved to their new home at the Ed Smith Stadium in 1998. Despite the loss of its popular baseball team this grass surface stadium continues to hold large events of a sporting nature but it is predominantly used for softball these days; however as of 2013 it will be the new home for VSI Tampa Bay FC soccer team who play in the USL Pro. It is occasionally used for larger outdoor events and special celebrations including concerts, parades and firework displays, and has the capacity to hold 6,700 people.
For those who want to do more than just be a spectator, there are some real fun events for adults and children who prefer to be more actively involved in things. The good Cookie 5k is such an event and is now in its second year after the successful launch of this charity fundraiser in 2012. This is great family day out that is organized in conjunction with Cookies for Kids Cancer and involves a 5 kilometer race through downtown Plant City, during the month of September. Runners start out at 7.30am and the partially shaded course is ideal for both beginners and experienced runners who will race through the most picturesque and historical streets of the town with its ancient oak trees providing some much needed shelter from the sun. Spectators on the sidewalks will be able to enjoy music and other entertainment as they cheer on participants and there is even a junior Sprint for Sprinkles event for children under the age of four, which covers 100 yards and begins mid-morning. At the finish line, you will find more live music to keep you entertained, a bouncy castle for the kids and raffles as well as other competitions to raise funds for this worthy cause. Prizes of course are also handed out here to the winners in the individual race categories.
Basket ball fans may be interested in the Hoop It Up Tour which also regularly takes place in the state. This is an exciting and energetic tournament that is orientated for the whole family and is designed to allow the participation of both players and spectators regardless of whether one prefers to play or watch basketball. This is part of Florida’s Let It Fly program which also sees the Florida Spring Classic held at the Otis Andrews Sports Complex in Plant City in June 2013 and is open to teams of all ages and both sexes.
